How to Water Your Garden
Two questions that novice gardeners often ask are how long and how often to water landscapes, lawns and garden plants. There is no one-size-fits-all answer to these questions. Soil texture, air temperatures, plant size and type, and many other factors play a part in determining proper watering techniques. There are different opinions about how to water plants and successful practices are sometimes counter-intuitive. This makes water a very confusing topic for gardeners. But once you know the basics, the confusion clears and one discovers that it is really pretty simple to water plants properly.
The good news is that the Arizona Municipal Water Users Association (AMWAU) has a great publication as well as some some easy-to-use interactive guides to help you determine a proper watering schedule for your unique garden. AMWUA breaks down the principles of proper watering into easily understood and remembered techniques based on the size of your plants.
For those who have drip irrigation systems, the guide shows you how to match your system’s outputs with your plants’ needs. Topics include which bubbler sizes to choose as well as which plants to place in the same zone (or the same valve.) The guide can also help you to determine how long to run your system. Information concerning soil types, automatic timers and troubleshooting tips are also provided.
