I am often asked how much of any given vegetable a person needs to grow or how many animals they will need to raise in order to feed a family. The query is often framed in terms of raising enough food for an entire year. There is no one size fits all answer to the question. Family size, preferences and eating habits differ. And estimated plant yields can vary by region. Even so, online crop calculators can be helpful to provide a basic idea of how many seeds to plant, how much you will need to grow for your family size, and yield estimates.
The Urban Farmer website has several free, interactive crop calculators available online, including a seed calculator, a vegetable yield calculator, and (my favorite) a how much to plant calculator.
